Curators of the 3rd edition of the DUOS FESTIVAL are delighted to announce an open call for collaborative workshops titled SOCIAL ECOLOGY, that will take place in Kilifi in February 2023.
SOCIAL ECOLOGY is a philosophical theory about the relationship between ecological and social issues. Associated with the social theorist Murray Bookchin, it presents ecological problems as arising mainly from social problems, in particular from different forms of hierarchy and domination. It is a theory of radical political ecology based on communalism, which opposes the current capitalist system of production and consumption. It aims to set up a truly democratic, decentralized, united society, guided by reason.
The DUOS Festival of Art and Education features collaborations between artists living and working in Kenya’s coastal region and artists affiliated with Academy of Art in Szczecin, Poland. Artists work in pairs to create works in their chosen disciplines that are shown at week-long events in Kilifi, and later in the exhibition in Museum of Contemporary Art in Szczecin, Poland.
Disciplines include theatre, film, painting, sculpture, fashion design, scenography, percussion music, photography, as well as alternative food production.
Artists selected to participate will spend three weeks working with a Polish partner in Kilifi, developing their projects with the help of students, youth, and related practitioners from the local community. These may be craftspeople, tradespeople, performers, or educators.
Completed projects will be presented at the 3rd DUOS Festival in Kilifi in February 2023. A corresponding exhibition of DUOS works will take place at the National Museum in Szczecin later in the year.
Selected artists will be given a production budget (1000 euro) and paid a salary (500 euro) for their participation.
Artists wishing to take part in the 3rd DUOS Festival are encouraged to contact the curatorial team at this address:
Please provide a short description of yourself and your artistic practice, along with documentation of your artistic works (max. 10 jpg files). An indication of which discipline is of the most interested is appreciated and will improve your chances of selection.
Applications must be received by July 1, 2022. The curators will contact those shortlisted for participation after that date. Accepted artists will be contracted with Technical University of Mombasa*.
Please read terms and conditions of the open-call before submitting your application!
