Gazing Nairobi: Contemporary Artistic Expressions and Slums’ Art Centres

Nairobi reveals itself as a vibrant art research laboratory. The UNIMC team interacted with some protagonists of the artistic mainstream in Kenya (Peter Ngugi, Yegonizer, Fred Abuga, Mudibo, Peter Kenyanya), and planned further cooperation related to the educational research line “Art Degree Zero”. Moreover, the team approached an art centre and a collective in Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa (Art360 Kibera https://www.facebook.com/creativitekibera and Masaai Mbili Art Collective https://www.facebook.com/Maasai-MBILI-ART-Collective-55160089643). Kibera, in spite of its challenges, is recently producing expressions of self-awareness and empowerment through artistic languages. These mindfulness practices are remarkable in the work by the young artist Kevo Stero.
