DUOS Festival Recordings Available Online

TPAAE invites you to listen to recordings made for the second iteration of the DUOS Festival, held in Kilifi and at the National Museum in Szczecin in 2021 and 2022. Artists from Poland and Kenya addressed the theme “Women Power”, creating music and lyrics for songs and an opera that were performed during events on two continents.

Collective AFiNiTY AFRICA, a group from Pwani University, composed songs and performed them performed during the concert “From Men to Women”, which took place at the Distant Relatives hostel in Kilifi in September 2021.

Goma Ra Kimbi is a hybrid opera created by Alicja Pilarczyk and Shangazi Masika. Based on the oral histories of Kenyan women, it incorporates Masika’s poems about everyday life. The libretto is sung by the Tumaini Choir, a group made up of women from local villages around Kilifi town, and students from Pwani University. The score is written by Pilarczyk and features elements of rap, pop and classical music styles. The piece is danced to an accompaniment of handmade rattles.

Gama Ra Kimbi reflects the important role that storytelling plays in the life of the Giriama people. It was performed in September 2021 at Tribe Bandas in Kilifi and exhibited at the National Museum in Szczecin in December 2021-January 2022.
