Kenyan Artists Named for 3rd DUOS FESTIVAL

Curators Łukasz Jastrubczak and Izabela Plucinska and the Board of Art of the Duos Festival (Marlena Chybowska-Butler, Wanyenda Leonard Chilimo, Rosita Deluigi, Stephen Muoki, Adonijah Ombura) are pleased to announce their selection of Kenyan participants for the 3rd edition of TPAAE’s DUOS Festival.

They include:

  • MWAMBI JONATHAN MBINGA
  • YONAH MUDIBO
  • TOMMIE OMINDE
  • PHILIP TANGARA (PET THE POET)
  • JOSEPH ALLAN GREEN
  • MIKE OKOTH
  • RUBY WANJIRU KANG’ETHE
  • CAROLINE NGOROBI

Along with partners from Poland, these artists will address the theme of Social Ecology, an alternative form political economy, at the festival, to be held in Kilifi and Mombasa in February 2023.

Developed by American philosopher and activist Murray Bookchin, Social Ecology examines causal relationships between social organization and environmental crises with particular focus on hierarchy and domination. It advocates Communalism as an alternative to Capitalist models of production and consumption, positing grassroots Libertarian Municipalism as the political foundation of a Free Society.

The DUOS Festival of Art and Education features collaborations between artists living and working in Kenya’s coastal region and artists affiliated with Academy of Art in Szczecin, Poland. Artists work in pairs to create works in their chosen disciplines that are shown at week-long events in Kilifi, and later in the exhibition in Museum of Contemporary Art in Szczecin, Poland.

Disciplines include theatre, film, painting, sculpture, fashion design, scenography, percussion music, photography, as well as alternative food production.

Artists selected to participate will spend three weeks working with a Polish partner in Kilifi, developing their projects with the help of students, youth, and related practitioners from the local community. Selected artists will be accorded a production budget and paid a salary for their participation. And they will participate in a corresponding exhibition of DUOS works at the National Museum in Szczecin later in the year.

Congratulations to the selected artists!! The curators and board also thanks those who submitted works for the open call!
