The origin of Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) can be traced back to the late 1940s where it existed as Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (MIOME). In 1966, MIOME became Mombasa Technical Institute (MTI) and started to admit all Kenyans regardless of religion or race. In the year 1972, MTI transformed to become the Mombasa Polytechnic, becoming the 2nd National Polytechnic in Kenya. In a Government strategy to increase access to University education across the Country, the Mombasa Polytechnic was converted to Mombasa Polytechnic University College (MPUC) in the year 2007.
In 2013 Mombasa polytechnic University College (MPUC) became Technical University of Mombasa after being fully chartered. With a student’s enrollment of over 15,000, TUM offers competitive programs across four schools and one institute namely: School of Engineering and Technology, School of Applied and Health Sciences, School of Business, School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Institute of Computing & Informatics
