John Mugubi
John Mugubi is a Professor of Film and Theatre Arts at Kenyatta University. He has more than twenty years teaching experience in the areas of Film, Drama, Literature, and Japanese Language and Culture. Prof. Mugubi holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Nairobi and a PhD from Kenyatta University. Currently, he is the Dean of School of Creative and Performing Arts, Film, and Media Studies at Kenyatta University. He has published extensively in Film, Dramatic Arts, and Literature. He has more than forty publications on Film. He focuses on Screenwriting, Playwriting, Film Genres, Film Theory and Criticism, Stylistics, and Research Methods in the Visual and performing Arts. Prof. Mugubi is the current Chairman of Film Lecturers and Trainers Association – Kenya (FleTA-K). Prof. Mugubi also chairs the Kenya International Theatre Festival Board of Trustees. He is a member of the Advisory Board for Multichoice Talent Factory; a film academy for the East African region that operates under the ambit of Multichoice Limited. Prof. Mugubi is the Editor-in-Chief of the following journals: Journal of African Theatre, Film, and Media Discourse; Journal of East African Theatre; International Journal of Visual and Performing Art; Nairobi Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences. He is also Editorial Board member of: International Journal of Research and Scholarly Communication, and Journal of African Movies.
As a producer and screenwriter, Prof. Mugubi has produced more than 100 TV dramas, documentaries, and short films. Prof. Mugubi has acted in and directed countless plays at the University and at his church where he is also a choir member. As an academic mentor, Prof. Mugubi has successfully supervised more than seventy Master’s and Doctoral students in the areas of Film, Theatre Arts, and Literature. Prof. Mugubi has judged film and drama locally and internationally, including the AFRICA MAGIC VIEWERS CHOICE AWARDS (AMVCA); a Multichoice Ltd initiative.
